Capacity Building and Citizen Science

At the Remote Sensing Research Centre, we’re big believers in the power of people working together to protect our environment. That’s why we support capacity building and Citizen Science in coastal and marine ecosystems. Through this approach, we empower everyday people to collect valuable data about coral reefs and seagrass environments, making an incredible impact on monitoring and conservation efforts.

What Do These Projects Do?

Our projects focus on giving citizen scientists the tools and knowledge they need to help map and monitor vital ecosystems like coral reefs and seagrass habitats. From hands-on training to innovative methods, we make it easier for anyone to contribute to environmental preservation. We’ve also hosted workshops on coastal and marine remote sensing, sharing insights with government and non-government agencies across the Asia-Pacific region.

Where It’s Happening

These exciting projects span several beautiful and biodiverse locations, including:

  • Moreton Bay Marine Park, Heron Reef, and the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia
  • Indonesia
  • Cook Islands
  • Fiji

Who’s Behind It?

Spearheading this effort is a passionate team led by Chris Roelfsema (Principal Investigator), along with Stuart PhinnEva Kovacs, and partners such as Coral WatchReef Check Australia, and UniDive. Together, they’ve been working tirelessly to provide resources and support to citizen scientists around the globe.

How Is It Funded?

The projects are supported by local agencies that understand the importance of protecting these vibrant ecosystems for future generations.

Why Does It Matter?

Citizen Science is more than just research; it’s about bringing people closer to nature while arming them with the tools to make a real difference. These programs connect everyday people with the ocean, inspire environmental stewardship, and encourage meaningful action to protect vulnerable habitats.
